It’s Wedding Season: How to Find the Perfect Outfit

, Ghana Street Journal

Wedding season is here, and with it comes the excitement—and sometimes stress—of finding the perfect outfit. Whether you’re a guest, a bridesmaid, or part of the couple tying the knot, dressing for the occasion is an art.

You want to look elegant, feel comfortable, and most importantly, match the event’s vibe. So, how do you strike the right balance?

Here’s a complete guide to help you find the perfect wedding outfit for any role you play.

1. Understand the Dress Code

Before you even start shopping, check the invitation for clues. Many weddings come with a dress code, and following it ensures you don’t stand out for the wrong reasons. Here’s a quick breakdown of common dress codes:

  • Black Tie: Think formal gowns and tuxedos. Ladies can go for floor-length dresses, while men should wear a tuxedo or a dark suit with a bow tie.
  • Cocktail Attire: A step down from black tie but still sophisticated. Women can opt for knee-length or midi dresses, and men should wear a suit with a tie.
  • Beach or Destination Wedding: Light, flowy fabrics are ideal. Ladies can wear floral maxi dresses, while men can go for linen shirts and tailored trousers.
  • Traditional or Cultural Weddings: Many weddings incorporate traditional attire. If invited to an African, Indian, or Asian wedding, it’s respectful (and stylish) to wear an outfit that aligns with the culture.

2. Consider the Venue and Weather

A beach wedding in Ghana’s warm sun requires a completely different outfit than an indoor ballroom reception in Accra. Consider breathable fabrics like cotton, chiffon, and silk for outdoor settings, while structured fabrics like velvet and satin work better for cooler, indoor environments.

3. Pick Colors Wisely

While white is generally reserved for the bride, some weddings also have other color restrictions. It’s always good to ask if there’s a color theme or a shade to avoid. Jewel tones like emerald green, royal blue, and burgundy are perfect for evening weddings, while pastel shades work well for daytime events.

4. Comfort is Key

No matter how stunning an outfit looks, if it’s uncomfortable, you’ll regret wearing it. Opt for a dress or suit that allows you to move, sit, and dance with ease.

5. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Your outfit isn’t complete without the right accessories. Statement earrings, a chic clutch, and the right pair of shoes can elevate your look. However, be careful not to overdo it—sometimes, less is more.

6. Don’t Forget Grooming

A stylish outfit deserves good grooming. Make sure your hair is neatly styled, and for men, a well-groomed beard or clean shave can make a huge difference.

7. Plan Ahead

The biggest mistake is waiting until the last minute to find your outfit. Start looking at least a month before the wedding to allow for tailoring, shipping delays, or any changes.
