It’s Not Political, It’s About Our Water- Dr Likee on His New Anti-Galamsey Movie

Ghanaian actor and comedian Dr Likee, known for his relatable skits and social commentary, has opened up about his upcoming movie, which takes a critical look at galamsey—the term used for illegal small-scale mining in Ghana.

The actor, whose real name is Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi, expressed deep concern about the devastating impact of galamsey on the nation’s water bodies.

“I have a lot of content on galamsey. In fact, I have a movie on it that will be out next month,” Dr Likee shared, offering a glimpse into his latest project.

The film, which he stressed is not politically driven, is designed to raise awareness and advocate for the protection of Ghana’s natural resources, particularly its water systems.

“The movie isn’t political; it’s meant to advise against galamsey because our water bodies are in terrible condition,” he explained.

Dr Likee’s passion for the subject stems from witnessing the stark contrast between Ghana’s deteriorating water bodies and the pristine preservation efforts he has observed abroad.

“When I travel, I see how they preserve their water bodies, but ours keep deteriorating,” he lamented.

His remarks echo the growing national concern over the destruction of rivers, streams, and lakes caused by illegal mining activities, which have polluted water sources with toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide, rendering many unsafe for human consumption.

Through his new film, Dr Likee aims to bring this issue to the forefront of public discourse, urging communities and authorities to take action against galamsey.

While illegal mining has provided livelihoods for many in rural areas, its long-term effects on the environment and health have become a national crisis.

The movie, he hopes, will inspire reflection and change, especially at the grassroots level, where many are either directly or indirectly affected by these destructive practices.

“I’m not just a comedian. I want to use my platform to address the issues affecting our country,” Dr Likee stated.
