It’s About Changing Technology, Not Dead Actors- Mercy Asiedu Addresses Kumawood’s Decline

Actress Mercy Asiedu has shared insights about the state of the industry, pushing back against claims that it has declined.

During an interview on Hitz FM, she passionately stated, “Kumawood is not dead. Actors and actresses are still available; producers are still available. It’s just that technology has changed.”

Her remarks address the growing perception that Kumawood, once a bustling hub of Ghanaian cinema, has lost its spark in recent years.

Asiedu highlighted how the shift in technology, especially with the decline of CD sales and the rise of digital platforms, has disrupted the traditional way of distributing films.

“At first, producers could release films every Monday and get their money back within the week,” she explained. “But now, nobody is buying CDs anymore.”

Her statement reflects the broader changes sweeping across industries globally, where digitization is altering how content is consumed.

Gone are the days when DVDs and CDs dominated the market; now, streaming platforms, digital downloads, and social media are shaping the way people access films.

However, Asiedu didn’t just point fingers at technology alone. She also acknowledged that the Ghanaian film industry was slow to adapt.

“Those responsible for the film industry in the country weren’t quick enough to adapt to changing technology, which is why we are where we are,” she said.

This shift in the film market not only impacted Kumawood but also other African film industries like Nollywood in Nigeria, which has made notable efforts to evolve by partnering with streaming services such as Netflix and creating content for digital platforms.

These changes have left actors, producers, and filmmakers needing to reinvent their craft, with many now exploring online distribution and production channels.

Asiedu’s words carry weight, considering her extensive career and legacy in the industry.
