Ghanaian actress Mercy Asiedu, widely known for her impressive Kumawood career, has officially made a transition to music, citing her passion for highlife and gospel as her main influences.
In an interview on Hitz FM, Mercy shared the motivation behind her decision to pursue music, explaining that her love for highlife music and the need for more female representation in the genre were key factors in her choice.
“I chose to do highlife music because we don’t have enough female highlife musicians in the country, apart from Akosua Agyapong,” Mercy explained, highlighting the significant gender gap in one of Ghana’s most cherished music traditions.
While highlife has long been a cornerstone of Ghanaian culture, it has historically been male-dominated. For Mercy, stepping into this space isn’t just about creating music; it’s about addressing this imbalance and honouring a genre that has shaped the country’s sound for decades.
While highlife is at the core of her music, Mercy emphasized that she does not want to be confined to one genre. “I combine highlife and gospel music in my work,” she said, pointing to her versatility and desire to blend styles that resonate with her spirit.

This fusion of highlife’s rich, rhythmic melodies with the soulful, uplifting messages of gospel allows Mercy to stay true to her roots while exploring new artistic avenues.
Mercy’s inspiration for her music stems from one of Ghana’s iconic figures in highlife, Awurama Badu. “Awurama Badu inspired my choice of music.
“I’ve been listening to her since childhood; she really inspired me, and I can say she is my role model,” she shared, reflecting on the deep connection she feels to the late highlife legend.
Awurama Badu, known for her powerful voice and timeless contributions to the genre, has left a lasting legacy, and for Mercy, carrying forward this musical tradition feels like a natural continuation of her artistic journey.
Now, as she embarks on her music career, that same passion and dedication are evident. “I am not stopping music anytime soon,” she declared confidently, underscoring her long-term commitment to this new chapter in her life.
Her entrance into the music scene reflects a broader trend of Ghanaian entertainers diversifying their talents and expanding into multiple creative fields.
As an artist, Mercy Asiedu is no stranger to evolving, and her move into music feels like an organic next step in a career defined by resilience and creativity.
Mercy’s journey is also a testament to the power of representation. By choosing to enter a male-dominated genre, she not only honours her musical role models but also paves the way for more women to find their place in highlife music.
