Ghanaian rapper and lyricist Kwame Ametepee Tsikata, widely recognized as M.anifest, has shed new light on his famed 2012 rivalry with fellow artist Sarkodie.

In an honest reflection on Starr FM, M.anifest dispelled long-held assumptions that their lyrical duel was rooted in animosity, describing it instead as a spontaneous and creative competition.

“It was not planned. I think I’ve said this several times, but people still don’t believe me,” he shared during a recent interview. “Both he [Sarkodie] and I can attest to the fact that it wasn’t premeditated. It came from the spirit of competition.

If he’s on record saying certain things, and as a competitive person, I get triggered by the mention of my name and my slogan, then it’s only natural for me to say, ‘Well, if you dey, me too I dey.’”

The lyrical exchange, which played out prominently in songs and generated significant buzz within the Ghanaian music scene, was nothing more than a showcase of skill, M.anifest clarified. “It was nothing personal.

“He hadn’t stolen any money from me, and I hadn’t taken any of his shoes or clothes,” he joked. “It was purely creative and competitive, and to some extent, rooted in ideological differences, which is perfectly fine because that’s what much of art is about.”

The “beef,” as fans labeled it, marked a pivotal moment in Ghanaian hip-hop. Both rappers released fiery tracks, including M.anifest’s “godMC” and Sarkodie’s “Kanta,” sparking debates, comparisons, and heightened interest in their artistry.

M.anifest emphasized that such rivalries, when handled respectfully, can be beneficial for the industry. “Both competitors benefit because it gives you the currency of visibility. People get to see you showcase your talent,” he noted.

The back-and-forth allowed fans to appreciate the lyrical dexterity of both artists, raising the bar for rap music in Ghana.
