It Was A Traditional Rite– Chieftaincy Minister Reacts To Child Marriage In Nungua

The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Amoah Boateng, informed JoyNews’ The Probe that the incident in Nungua, which gained attention on social media, was a traditional rite and not a marriage.

Mr. Boateng clarified that the video circulating online depicted a traditional rite, not a marriage ceremony. In response to public concern, his Ministry, along with the Gender Ministry and the Attorney General’s office, promptly engaged with the traditional authorities of Nungua and the Ga priest involved.

Prioritizing the child’s well-being, Mr. Boateng and his team collaborated with the police to ensure the safe removal of the minor from the Nungua Community.

As investigations progress, Mr. Asamoah Boateng has committed to collaborating with law enforcement agencies and local communities to uphold justice and accountability.

Additionally, Mr. Asamoah Boateng clarified that the girl in question is 16 years old, not 12 as initially reported.

According to him, “During the event, a lot of things were said and the information came out as if they were marrying the girl to the Wulomo [Gborbu Wulomo Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII]. Through these discussions, it became evident that there were no intentions of carnal relations with the young girl,” he said on Sunday.
