Highlife musician Akwaboah has revealed how legendary Ghanaian musician Kojo Antwi inspired him to create his own signature event, the Shades of Love Valentine’s Day concert, now in its seventh year.

In an interview on Hitz FM on January 30, 2025, Akwaboah shared how he admired Kojo Antwi’s annual December 24th show, a major event in the music calendar, and how it served as a template for his own musical aspirations.

“I looked at those who were ahead of me, a person like Kojo Antwi. He had a December 24th event that he does, and I wanted something like that for myself,” Akwaboah said.

His desire to host his own event, independent of promoters and bookings, stemmed from a need to have control over his music and career.

“I wouldn’t always want to depend on a promoter or someone to call me for an event, but I can host my own event. This year will be the 7th year,” Akwaboah added proudly.

The musician’s Shades of Love concert has become an annual tradition for many music lovers, especially those who look forward to the blend of heartfelt performances and romantic tunes to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Akwaboah also opened up about the creative process behind his songs, revealing the immense effort he puts into his craft.

One of his most popular songs, “Hye Me Bo,” required him to dive deeply into his emotions and pay careful attention to the structure of the lyrics.

“If you are going to write songs like Hye Me Bo, where you need to talk and get deep into your emotions, it can take you a month or two, sometimes even a year,” he explained.

He emphasized the patience required for perfection, explaining, “If the lines don’t make sense, I leave it and come back to it to make sure that the first lines go with the second. It took a year for me to put Hye Me Bo together.”
