Is It A Crime? – Kwesi Pratt Defends Kennedy Agyapong’s ‘Showdown’ Statement

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jr. has shared his thoughts about the disciplinary committee of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) invitation to Kennedy Agyapong, a candidate for the party’s presidential nomination.

On the August 29, 2023, edition of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, he questioned the need for such a move in response to Kennedy Agyapong’s controversial “showdown” comment. He stressed that the disciplinary committee’s actions might be incorrect if the invitation was made merely because of the remark in question.

He emphasized that the “showdown” phrase cannot be used as a basis for disciplinary action because it is not against the law.

“It has come to my attention that our brother, Kennedy Akompreko Agyapong, has been summoned by the disciplinary committee. and I was asking about his crime for such an invitation, and I heard him go on to say that there will be a showdown… But if he was called because of his comment about “showdown,” then no, because is “showdown” a crime?”

“Is that a crime? Even in a boxing match, it is not illegal to use the term showdown. During the time of Muhammad Ali, he said showdown… So, if he has committed an offence for them to invite him to the disciplinary committee, then fine, but if it has to do with the showdown comment, then no, I don’t see his crime.”

Agyapong challenged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in a video that went viral on August 26 during the NPP’s Super Delegates Conference. He was complaining about how his agent had been treated at the North East Regional polling centre.
