Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the country’s foreign minister were tragically killed on Monday following a helicopter crash in foggy conditions.
This incident has left the Islamic Republic without two key leaders during a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei swiftly appointed a relatively unknown vice president as caretaker, reassuring the public that the government remains stable.
Despite the loss of these leaders, Iran has not provided any explanation for the crash and has not suggested foul play.
In the aftermath of the crash, life in Tehran continued as usual with businesses operating and children attending school. However, there was a noticeable increase in the presence of security forces, both in uniform and plain clothes.
Later in the day, a large crowd gathered in downtown Vali-e-Asr Square to mourn the loss of Raisi and the foreign minister.
Mourners held up posters of the deceased leaders and waved Palestinian flags, while some were seen praying and visibly emotional. Women wearing black chadors stood together, holding photos of the departed president.
“We were shocked that we lost such a character, a character that made Iran proud, and humiliated the enemies,” said Mohammad Beheshti, 36.
The crash comes as the Israel-Hamas war roils the region. Iran-backed Hamas led the attack that started the conflict, and Hezbollah, also supported by Tehran, has fired rockets at Israel. Last month, Iran launched its own unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel.
All eight individuals on board a Bell 212 helicopter, which Iran acquired in the early 2000s, perished in the crash, as reported by the state-run IRNA news agency.
The victims included Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, a senior cleric from Tabriz, a Revolutionary Guard official, and three crew members, according to IRNA.
