Highlife legend Kwabena Kwabena has shared his perspective on the often-discussed intersection of politics and the arts.
Speaking on how political affiliations or actions can influence a musician’s career in Ghana, he expressed concern about the tendency for artists to face backlash for engaging in political activities.
“There are so many artistes who have done something political, and it seems what they did affected them in a sense of being able to be out there and doing their business,” Kwabena Kwabena remarked. “A musician’s career has nothing to do with anything he or she does politically.”
The statement highlights a broader issue within the Ghanaian entertainment landscape, where artists who align themselves with political parties sometimes experience strained public relations or reduced opportunities.

Kwabena Kwabena’s stance calls for separating creative expression from political involvement, ensuring that the artistic contributions of musicians remain untainted by partisan biases.
Reflecting on his own career, the musician emphasized his role as a pioneer in blending creativity with festive traditions.
“On the 14th of February 2014, that was the first time I did a Valentine concert.
“So, I am the first artiste to start Valentine’s shows,” he said, adding, “And it shouldn’t be a problem if anybody wants to do some because I believe there are a lot of people out there who would want to go out on Valentine’s.”
