Accused of murdering renowned pastry chef Thembekile Letlape, Sibusiso Zitha returned to the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday to await a decision on his bail application.

The case has gained attention not only for the tragic circumstances but also for Zitha’s requests to the court, where he pled to be temporarily released to handle his business affairs and secure his children’s well-being.

This follows Zitha’s admission of guilt, a decision that he expressed with a measure of remorse and a desire for accountability.

In a statement filed with his bail application, Zitha made clear his understanding of the charges and the implications of his guilty plea. “I acknowledge the weight of my confession,” he said, maintaining that he does not pose a danger to the public or any individual.

“There is no evidence that I would evade trial. I am fully aware of the sentence this court may impose.”

Zitha stressed his role as a father and businessman, expressing deep concern for the impact his detention could have on his family and livelihood. He described the sequence of events that led him to turn himself in, making a point to clarify that he had not tried to evade the police.

“I didn’t wait for the authorities to come find me. I turned myself in, accepting responsibility for what I had done,” he noted, adding that he and the victim were under the influence of cocaine and alcohol after an extended period of sleep deprivation at the time of the incident. He emphasized, “This is, however, not an excuse for my actions.”

The court session also introduced testimony from a state witness, whose identity and statements remain under protective court order, indicating that the case’s sensitivity continues to evolve.

Letlape’s death on May 30 at Zitha’s Fourways, Johannesburg, residence brought sorrow to the culinary community and wider public, intensifying scrutiny around the case and Zitha’s character.

Zitha’s bail hearing is postponed until October 31, as the court carefully considers his appeal, balancing his plea for temporary freedom with the demand for justice on behalf of the late Letlape.
