IGP And Attorney General Being Sued By 82 Police Officers For Failing To Promote Them

Eighty-two (82) police officers have filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General, the Ghana Police Service and the Inspector General of Police, alleging that they acted unfairly and capriciously by not promoting them after they finished their studies under the service’s study leave with pay policy.

According to the police officers, the study leave with pay policy of the service entitles them to promotions when their studies are over, however, even after several months of completing their studies, they have not received a promotion.

“All the Plaintiffs applied for the 2017/2018 Academic Year Study Leave with Pay programme for tertiary courses ranging between two (2) to four (4) years.

“Each and every plaintiff having qualified was selected and made to enter into the requisite bond to serve the police service upon completion of their various courses for at least five (5) years upon condition that the bond would be entreated when breached.”

The Ghana Police Service has been sued in Accra’s High Court by a group of police officers led by D/Inspector Kofi Osal, who were granted study leave with pay for the 2017/2018 academic year, but were denied promotions or entry into the Police College upon completion of their studies.

They claim that the Ghana Police Service ignored their requests for promotion after they had properly notified the agency of their completion of their programmes of study and petitioned it to do so.

This is despite the fact that others in similar situations have been promoted. The lawsuit was filed on May 15, 2023, and the deadline for the defendants to respond after being served is eight days.
