The Minority Leader and MP for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has blamed the rising cholera cases in his constituency on the closure of public toilets.
Speaking in Parliament, he highlighted how local political actions had worsened sanitation issues, leading to the outbreak.
“All public toilets in Efutu at the Nshorna have been seized and locked,” he said. “And you, the minister, fortunately, went to Winneba and met the fisher folks at the Nshorna, and that is where the problem is. So they have no place to ease themselves, and it is a problem.”
He criticized the trend where party supporters take over public facilities after a change in government, warning that cholera does not discriminate by political affiliation.

“If a party comes into government and somebody thinks, ‘Let me go and lock up the toilet,’ when there is a cholera outbreak, it doesn’t look at party colours.
“Whether you are CPP, NPP, NDC… I believe that this is a matter that has to be looked at critically, and upon that, we will be able to contain it.”
Afenyo-Markin also questioned the vaccination strategy, arguing that Efutu, which had recorded 18 cases, should be prioritized over Agona West, which had only six cases.
“In terms of vaccination, he said they are yet to get approval for Efutu. I felt that that should rather be prioritized.
“If Agona West is recording just six cases and we have 18 in Efutu, and you are rather vaccinating in Agona West, you may have to look at it instead of saying you are now seeking approval for Efutu.”
