In a reflective statement delivered in Parliament on January 6, 2025, Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin recounted the challenges he faced working with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority during the 8th Parliament.
He characterized the opposition as “tough, stubborn, and difficult,” underscoring the tense dynamics that often defined parliamentary deliberations.
“Mr. Speaker, many people didn’t understand why I was combative on several occasions,” he admitted. “Some said, ‘You are the Majority Leader; why don’t you reach out?’ But they didn’t know the pressure I was under.”

Afenyo-Markin painted a picture of an unyielding Minority that, in his words, was “smelling power.” He added, “I understand that ambition, but it made reaching any agreement nearly impossible.”
The Deputy Majority Leader expressed frustration over the stalled progress of government business, citing the inability to push through key policies due to the opposition’s resistance.
“The number of government initiatives I wanted to complete for political expediency and principle—I couldn’t achieve them because I didn’t have the support of my respected colleagues,” he stated.
Reflecting on his tenure, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the unique challenges of managing a sharply divided Parliament, where every decision was heavily scrutinized and often met with partisan resistance.
