I Was Depressed, But She Came Through – Serwaa Amihere

Serwaa Amihere has opened up about a dark moment in her life and how a simple yet profound act of kindness helped her find light amidst the struggle.

Serwaa has always maintained an air of composure in the public eye. However, behind that calm exterior, she has faced moments of personal turmoil, including a particularly difficult period following the public leak of a controversial video.

The incident, which involved her ex-boyfriend Henry Fitz allegedly leaking a private moment, thrust Serwaa into the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Speaking at the Ignite Youth Empowerment Thanksgiving Service organised by Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Serwaa shared how she was once battling depression in the midst of the scandal. “I was depressed and was in my house crying.

“You know, that day,” she recalled. “I wasn’t talking to anyone. But she came and she said, ‘Let’s go and buy ice cream.’” The person she referred to was Auntie Obuobia, a long-time supporter and close family friend who has been there for Serwaa through thick and thin.

Serwaa described how Auntie Obuobia stepped into her life at that exact moment of emotional vulnerability.

“She came to pick me up. Took me to Osu. And I was trying to wear a cap, I remember. And she said, ‘Why? Why do you want to hide your face? Let’s go.’”

It was a gesture that many would overlook, but for Serwaa, it meant the world. “You know, she bought me ice cream. A big cup of ice cream. And said, ‘You today eat all the ice cream you can.’”

It wasn’t just about the ice cream, though. The outing became a pivotal turning point for Serwaa. “She said she was going to take me for lunch the next day. And we both cancelled some way, somehow.

But Auntie Obuobia, thank you, because I never told you how grateful I was then for that ride. It did a lot of good for me,” Serwaa admitted, showing her gratitude for the support she received in one of the lowest points of her life.
