I Want People to Accept My Music, Not Just My Family Name – Xheila

Fast-rising Ghanaian musician Xheila, sister to renowned artist Gyakie, has made it clear she is determined to carve her own path in the music industry.

Speaking on Joy News’ Changes monitored by Ghanastreetjournal, she shared her journey, challenges, and strategies for gaining recognition beyond her family legacy.

“I’m still trying to win people’s hearts,” Xheila confessed. “I mean, I want people to accept my music, not just the family name.”

Xheila explained how she started by doing cover songs to familiarize fans with her voice and face before releasing her original music. “Strategy number one was already put in place—doing cover songs so that when I drop my own song, they won’t be like, ‘Who is this?’ The next step is simple—promote, promote, promote!” she emphasized.

When asked about her proudest achievements so far, the young musician highlighted her ability to remain disciplined in the face of challenges, particularly in a society that often tests one’s values. “I’ve been in situations where, if I wasn’t disciplined enough, I’d have ended up being a girl you wouldn’t like to talk to right now,” she admitted.

One striking revelation was her decision to turn down a lucrative music label deal because it came with inappropriate conditions. “The person offered me a contract, but I had to sleep with him,” she said. “I made my point clear that I wanted to do business. I ghosted him because I’m standing on my principles. It’s not about my music; it’s about me. And I won’t do that.”

Xheila also spoke about societal pressure on young people to flaunt material wealth as a sign of success. “My mom always says, ‘If you rush, you crash,’ and it’s true. There’s no need to rush; I’m okay with where I am,” she said confidently.

Despite facing labels like “upcoming” and “underground,” Xheila maintains a positive outlook. “I don’t mind being called an upcoming artist, but underground? That sounds like you’ve been buried. I correct people who call me that,” she said with a laugh.
