On October 6, the air at the Accra International Conference Centre buzzed with excitement and nostalgia as legendary Ghanaian actress Grace Omaboe, affectionately known as Maame Dokono, was honoured at the 2024 Ghana Women Awards.
With a career spanning over five decades, Maame Dokono has not only entertained but has also significantly influenced Ghanaian culture and society.
From her iconic roles in television dramas, particularly the beloved Akan Drama series, to her leadership as the face of the Obra Drama Group, Maame Dokono has been a fixture in the lives of many Ghanaians.
She’s not just an actress; she’s a storyteller who has captured the hearts of audiences with her compelling performances. “I grew up watching her on TV. She’s like family to us,” said one attendee, reflecting on the deep connection many feel toward her.
Maame Dokono’s impact extends beyond acting. She hosted the cherished storytelling program By the Fireside, which enchanted both young and old, creating a sense of community and anticipation for each new episode.
Her talents also shine through her work as a talk show host, where she tackled crucial social and human rights issues, using her platform to advocate for the vulnerable.
Her compassion led her to establish the Peace and Love orphanage, where she has dedicated herself to caring for orphans and less privileged children in Ghana.
This noble endeavour has been a lifeline for many, showcasing her belief that everyone deserves a chance at a better life. “She has a heart of gold,” said a colleague, underscoring the love and respect she garners in her community.
The Ghana Women Awards, organized by Brein Consult, have spent over 15 years celebrating the achievements of remarkable Ghanaian women across various sectors, empowering others to follow in their footsteps.
As Maame Dokono accepted her award, she expressed heartfelt gratitude: “I think I have touched the life of every Ghanaian, and I want to say thank you to everybody. I am a living legend… Thank you very much.”
