I Realized I Was Singing at Age Seven—Diana Hamilton

Diana Hamilton’s rise to gospel stardom didn’t follow the traditional route of a divine calling or prophetic vision.

Instead, it started with a simple, almost unnoticed moment at the age of seven. Speaking candidly on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Diana shared how her musical journey was shaped by the natural unfolding of her passion for singing.

“It just happened,” she said, reflecting on her early years. “I just realized I was singing.” For Diana, it wasn’t about a sudden revelation or a push from others—it was the sheer joy of singing that led her to pursue it more seriously.

As a young girl, she noticed that her voice sounded different, better even, than most around her. When you sing and it sounds good in your ear, it’s hard to ignore.

“But what set her apart from others was the way she saw adults sing and thought, “I could sing just like them, if not better.”

From the age of seven, Diana couldn’t help but sing wherever she went. Whether it was in her room, the kitchen, or at school, singing became a part of her daily routine.

She also discovered that singing wasn’t just for entertainment; she could turn everyday tasks into musical moments, often singing what others would merely recite.

Her love for singing never wavered, even when she wasn’t always given the platform to showcase it.

During her time at Morning Star School, Diana was eager to sing in front of others, but the opportunity didn’t always come.

“All the DBs were the ones giving the tune for school,” she recalled, “and I was just looking for my opportunity to ever get the chance.”

It was at the age of 13, however, that Diana took the first bold step toward becoming the artist we know today. It was then that she began performing at her local church, where her aunt, who was raising her at the time, witnessed her talent firsthand.

Her aunt, who played a significant role in Diana’s early musical years, would encourage her to sing at church.

Diana recalls being reluctant at first, but her aunt would insist, pushing her out of her comfort zone. “She would give my name to the elders of the church,” Diana shared. “And I’d be so crossed, but I’d go sing.”
