Akua Donkor, the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has launched a search for a husband. The politician, who has been a consistent presidential candidate in Ghana’s general elections, has stated that she is ready to settle down.
Exhibiting her famous sense of humour, Madam Donkor revealed in an interview on Kofi TV that she needs a man by her side who will be the first gentleman of the land if she wins the elections in 2024.
She was however quick to add that she will clean and cook for her man as expected in the conventional African society but only wants to consolidate her status with the man’s name.
“I haven’t re-married since my husband died. It’s been two years and my ring is no longer on my finger. I need to get married again because I need a partner as a female politician. It gets to a point in this political career where your and your husband’s presence will be required. I need a man to become a first gentleman after I win power.”
“You won’t marry me to come and cook and clean for you. I won’t be responsible for house chores, that won’t happen. I only want your name,” she added.
Madam Donkor was elected assemblywoman for Herman, a step closer to her goal of becoming Ghana’s president. Her desire to run for president was evident in the 2012 elections when she applied as an independent candidate.
The electoral commission, however, barred her from running. Her party, the Ghana Freedom Party, has its headquarters in Kabu, in Ghana’s Eastern Region. However, on January 22, 2016, this was destroyed by fire.
This does not dampen her desire to become President. In her opinion, forming a political party is a necessary step toward becoming president. Madam Donkor is currently in the process of establishing regional offices for her party in all ten regions of Ghana.
