John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has declined a proposed debate with Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that the Vice President should address the Ghanaian people and apologise for the country’s current economic challenges.
Mahama’s response came after President Nana Akufo-Addo suggested that the former president should engage in a debate with Dr. Bawumia. In a pointed rebuttal, Mahama used the popular title of a Shatta Wale song to assert his position.

“I will not bring Bawumia to my level by debating him. He should go and debate the people of Ghana and apologise to them. I know my level,” Mahama remarked, expressing his unwillingness to engage with the Vice President directly.
His criticism of Bawumia was sharp, particularly regarding the Vice President’s leadership of the Economic Management Team, which Mahama holds responsible for the country’s economic difficulties.
Mahama went further to discuss the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program, which has been a signature initiative of the Akufo-Addo government.
While acknowledging the value of the program, he highlighted significant issues with its implementation. “I have made it clear that there are implementation problems with the Free SHS because there is no dedicated source of funding,” he explained.
He also addressed parental dissatisfaction with the double-track system, a measure introduced to manage the increased student population under Free SHS, and the declining quality of food provided to students.
“Parents are also not happy with the double-track system, and the quality of food the children are being given is not good. So, I have said that the NDC is coming to power to fix these three things,” Mahama reiterated.
The NDC flagbearer’s remarks, referencing Shatta Wale’s I Know My Level, suggest a confident stance as he distances himself from a debate with Bawumia, focusing instead on addressing the concerns of Ghanaians and outlining the NDC’s plans for resolving issues within the Free SHS program.
In a bold critique of President Akufo-Addo, Mahama added, “He (Akufo-Addo) is not in this country, or he has been sleeping because I have made it clear that there are implementation problems with the Free SHS.

“One, there is no dedicated funding. Two, parents are not happy with the double-track system. Three, the quality of food the children are being given is not good. So, I have said that the NDC is going to come and fix these three things.”
