In a lively segment of the Drink Champs interview at REVOLT WORLD in Atlanta, Method Man shared a humorous story about his early days in rap.
Responding to a question about his first rap name, he quipped, “Oh, you playing with me! I think it was, like, Papa Smurf or some shit like that,” eliciting laughter from co-host N.O.R.E. and the audience.
With a nostalgic tone, he added, “I was big on the Smurfs. Big time,” reflecting on his childhood admiration for the beloved cartoon characters.
However, when pressed further about any other names he might have used before settling on Method Man, the iconic MC light-heartedly deflected, saying, “I don’t wanna talk about this no more.”
Method Man first emerged in the early 1990s as a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, a groundbreaking hip-hop group that revolutionized the genre with their unique sound and style.
The group was formed in 1992, and its members included other prominent artists like RZA, GZA, Raekwon, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Method Man quickly stood out for his smooth delivery and the blend of hard-hitting lyrics with playful charisma.
Before he was known as Method Man, he experimented with different rap names, including a humorous early name inspired by his love for cartoons—he jokingly mentioned “Papa Smurf” during interviews. This playful side often complemented his serious lyrical content.
In 1993, Method Man’s major breakthrough came with the release of “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers),” which featured his standout track “Method Man.”
The album was critically acclaimed and is often considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, establishing the Wu-Tang Clan as a force in the industry.
