I Don’t Support LGBTQ+ —John Dramani Mahama Declares

Former president of Ghana and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated categorically that, as a Christian and member of the Assemblies of God Church, he does support the promotion of gay activities in the country.

During a public forum with the clergy in Koforidua as part of his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, the former President reiterated his opposition to the LGBTQ community. He emphasized that his faith guides him not to condone such practices.

Currently, Parliament is deliberating on legislation regarding the LGBTQ community and individuals in Ghana. This initiative has garnered significant support from various faith-based organizations. However, some are against the proposed bill.

The bill in question, known as the Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill or the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, has sparked numerous controversies since its introduction in Parliament. Many have criticized it as being overly harsh and draconian.

If passed, the bill will criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding, and engagement in homosexual acts. It proposes severe penalties, including up to ten years of imprisonment for LGBTQ+ advocates and three years for individuals identifying as such.

Additionally, the bill aims to restrict access to healthcare services, including HIV medication, for the LGBTQ+ community.
