At 77 years old, Elton John is reflecting on the twilight of his legendary career and the realities of ageing.
In an interview ahead of his upcoming documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, the music icon opened up about his health struggles and his thoughts on mortality as he steps away from the stage.
Elton, who has long captivated audiences with his flamboyant performances and timeless hits, has battled several health issues in recent years.
He’s had both knees and one hip replaced—procedures that became necessary after years of relentless touring.

A fall in 2021 forced him to delay his farewell tour, marking one of the few times the tireless performer has had to hit pause.
Now, as his long career winds down, Elton is getting used to the idea that his touring days are behind him. “It’s very tiring. I am used to it. I’m a veteran at it,” he admits in the documentary, which follows him during his final Yellow Brick Road tour.
The film captures Elton in the dressing room at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, reflecting on his life nearly five decades after first performing there in front of 110,000 people.
“I don’t know how much time I have left,” he says, voicing what many of his fans might not want to hear. “You think about that more when you get to my age.
2You think about life and death. You think, ‘Well, I just want to be where I want to be now.’”
For Elton, that means stepping back from the exhaustive demands of touring. A
fter the conclusion of his Yellow Brick Road tour, he has officially retired from the road, focusing instead on other creative pursuits like making records and producing radio shows.
“I don’t have to work after this,” he says, with a sense of relief. “But travelling takes so much out of you.”
