During her appearance on the We In Miami podcast, up-and-coming rapper Ming Luanli made it clear that she doesn’t harbour any hatred towards her elder sister Nicki Minaj. However, she did acknowledge that their relationship is far from healthy.
In addition to discussing her own music career, inspirations, and dating experiences, the 18-year-old bravely opened up about the bullying she endured as a child due to her association with the renowned music icon.
Ming Luanli also revealed that despite sharing the same father but having different mothers, they were never able to form a close bond.
“I’ve never called her Nicki, by her name, at all. Calling her Nicki always felt weird, I’ve always called her Onika, too,” she admitted. “But we was never close, but we had a good bond. She was always, like, busy. She be busy and stuff like that, I be doing my sh*t, too. But at the end of the day, I know that I still got love for her, she still got love for me, and I’mma still be proud of her.”
Mi Ling who comes from New York also reminisced about the time when individuals started connecting the dots and realizing her connection to the renowned Nicki Minaj.
“In elementary, middle school, high school, the moment people knew who I was, it was either like they would ask me about my sister or ask me, like, just weird things that’s gonna make me feel uncomfortable,” she recalled. “At the time, I felt not only attacked, I felt vulnerable. I felt like I was by myself.”
In regards to her aspiration to follow in Minaj’s footsteps in the music industry, she acknowledged that her career path has attracted a lot of negativity and comparisons.
Ming added that her peers often wonder why her sister doesn’t offer assistance. Nevertheless, despite facing these challenges, she openly confessed that she continues
to strive to impress Minaj, even though she acknowledges that she will never reach the same level of success as the esteemed Young Money veteran.
