Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Arinze has long been a beloved figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry, known for his impressive acting chops and his distinct voice.
However, many may not know that Arinze has had an active music career as well, having released two albums over the years.
But in an interview on the Curiosity Made Me Ask show hosted by Bae U Barbie, Arinze recently revealed that his departure from the music scene was not due to failure, but rather a personal decision to focus on his acting career.
“I didn’t fail as a musical artist,” Segun Arinze said confidently, addressing the lingering rumors that his exit from music was a result of a lack of success. “I left music on my own volition. If I wanted to do music, I would have continued.”
This bold statement is his way of setting the record straight and clarifying that his decision to step away from music was driven by his passion for other pursuits, not any sense of failure.
In fact, Arinze’s journey began in a completely different direction. He studied Theatre Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, a decision that laid the foundation for his future career in Nollywood.

“I read theatre art at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife,” he recalled. “I left school, I did well. I went into my music on my own volition.”
His story is a testament to the power of choice and self-determination. Arinze was always someone who followed his heart, and when he felt the calling to focus more on acting, he did just that.
“When I decided to concentrate on my acting career, I concentrated on my acting,” he said, emphasizing that his decision to pivot was one based on his own interests and goals.
Yet, Arinze hasn’t completely shut the door on music. He made it clear that music still holds a special place in his heart. “I can always go back to music. I didn’t fail. I’ve two albums. I suspended it [my music career].
“When I feel it’s time, I will go back. I still sing. The voice is still there,” he shared, expressing his intent to return to music when the time feels right.
But for Arinze, the return to music won’t be motivated by commercial success or fame. “I will be going back to music but I won’t be coming into it for commercial reasons,” he explained.
“I will return to music just because I want to sing, not because I want to make money.” His words reflect a deep love for music, one that transcends financial gain and popularity.
