Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy has opened up about the ongoing debate surrounding his label as an “industry boy,” a term often used in the music scene to describe artists who are perceived to benefit from an established system of support.
Addressing the issue in a recent interview, Stonebwoy sought to clarify misconceptions while emphasizing his genuine connection to Ghana’s creative arts industry.
“I’m not an ‘industry boy’ in the sense that an industry sat down to craft me. No,” Stonebwoy stated.
“The industry is responsible for the growth and well-being of our creative arts, from the radio stations to the TV stations, all the traditional and modern media. But I’ve built my career through hard work, not by being moulded or excessively propped up by the system.”
The debate gained traction after fellow artist Shatta Wale, known for his outspoken views, criticized the industry’s alleged favouritism and labeled Stonebwoy as an “industry boy.”

Stonebwoy, however, downplayed the notion, encouraging fans and stakeholders to focus on constructive dialogue.
“We all understand, and he [Shatta Wale] has said it many times, but that’s not the truth,” he remarked. “It’s important for fans to be more discerning and constructive in their support, rather than blindly following negative narratives.”
Stonebwoy’s response reflects his efforts to maintain a balanced relationship with the industry while addressing criticisms with poise.
“I’m not an industry boy per se, and I can’t see myself as one. But it’s good that I address it, as it’s becoming somewhat of a reality,” he explained.
Despite the controversy, Stonebwoy expressed deep respect and appreciation for the industry that has played a role in shaping his career.
“The industry loves me, and I love them. I know how to relate. I love that it’s my industry. I can’t create hate for myself within the industry,” he affirmed.
