Reggae-dancehall artist Ras Kuuku has opened up about the bittersweet realities of his career on Hitz FM, where he spoke about the support he has offered to younger artists and the lack of acknowledgement he’s received in return.
Known for his soulful, powerful performances and advocacy for reggae-dancehall in Ghana, Kuuku has, over the years, quietly played a pivotal role in helping several now-popular artists make their way in the industry. However, his contributions, he says, often go unnoticed as artists rise to fame and move on.
“There are a lot of artistes in the country I helped groom, but once they made it, they didn’t recognize me,” Kuuku shared, clearly disappointed but resolved. He recalled a time when the late Ebony was emerging onto the scene, revealing that Bullet, her manager, reached out for Kuuku’s support.

“Even before Ebony became popular, Bullet called me once to feature on a song with his new artist,” Kuuku reminisced, illustrating how he has consistently extended a hand to help younger talents find their footing.
Kuuku’s experience is far from unique in the industry. Many mentors, collaborators, and established artists provide valuable guidance and support to emerging talents, often without formal acknowledgement.
Kuuku pointed to fellow artist Yaa Pono, another influential figure who has contributed to the success of others, yet he, too, has gone largely unappreciated for his efforts.
“Yaa Pono has done a lot for others, but has he received the appreciation he deserves?” Kuuku questioned, sparking a conversation about respect and gratitude in the Ghanaian music industry.
The conversation soon shifted from mentorship to Kuuku’s own prowess as a performer, a quality he believes has yet to be fully recognized.
“When it comes to performance in Ghana, I am the best,” he declared confidently. “I haven’t had the chance to showcase this as much as I should, but when it comes to performing with a live band or even on a beat, no one comes close.” For Kuuku, performing is not just about entertainment; it’s a skill and a passion that he has dedicated himself to mastering.
