Howell Wayans, the patriarch of the Wayans family, has passed away at the age of 86. Marlon Wayans, one of Howell’s ten children, confirmed his father’s passing on social media.
“Legend. When i was a child I asked my Dad what did you want to be when grew up? He simply said ‘I wanted to be a man’ I said ‘not a lawyer? A doctor? An actor?’ He said ‘just a man.'”
Howell Wayans was born in New York City in 1936 and was a former supermarket manager. He married Elvira Alethia, and the couple enjoyed almost seven decades of marriage.
The Wayans family is one of Hollywood’s most prominent and respected celebrity dynasties, known for producing some of the funniest TV shows and films.
The Wayans family has suffered another loss recently, as Elvira Wayans, the matriarch of the family, passed away in 2020 at the age of 81. Elvira gave birth to ten children, including entertainers Damon Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans.
The family has starred in a slew of films and TV shows, including “In Living Color” and “The Wayans Bros.”
Following the news of Howell Wayans’ passing, Omar Epps, a close friend of Marlon Wayans, paid tribute to him on social media.
The Wayans family has lost a beloved patriarch, but their legacy in Hollywood will continue to live on through their many contributions to the entertainment industry.
Howell has been described by his loved ones as a disciplinarian and a hard worker who instilled core tenets and values in all of his kids. He was supportive of their aspirations for comedy, acting and writing … and it clearly paid off, as the Wayans are a household name.
He’s survived by his children and many grandchildren. Howell was 86.
