When your feelings for another person are not returned, it can be very difficult to control your obsession with them.

Keep in mind that leaving the past behind is a slow and steady process. Take your time and praise yourself for the little things you accomplish.

If you need assistance getting through this difficult period, ask friends, family, or a therapist for support. Here are a few ways to shift your attention and move on:

  • Direct your attention towards yourself: Make an effort to better yourself and take care of yourself. Engage in activities that bring you pleasure, establish your own goals, and prioritise your own wellbeing.
  • Acknowledge and embrace your emotions: Give yourself permission to experience disappointment and accept your feelings. Being upset is normal; just know that it’s a part of the journey.
  • Develop new hobbies: Fill your time and mind with new pursuits by learning about different hobbies and interests. In certain cases, this can be an excellent method of increasing one’s social network.
  • Cut Off Communication: Limit your contact with the person you’re obsessed with if you can. Conversations that take place in person, over text, or on social media all fall under this category. Putting some space between yourself and the obsession might help you escape its grip.
  • Learn from the Experience: Use this time for self-reflection. Consider what you’ve learned from this experience and how you can grow as an individual.
  • Surround Yourself with Supportive Friends: Spend time with friends who make you feel good and help you. Socialising with others can help you forget about the other person and create a happy atmosphere.
  • Challenge Negative Thoughts: When obsessive thoughts arise, challenge them with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your worth and the potential for positive experiences in the future.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: You must learn to accept the fact that not everyone you show interest in will return your feelings. You deserve to be with someone who loves and respects you, so please know that it’s alright.
  • Create Mental Distance: Practice mindfulness and meditation to help you distance yourself mentally from obsessive thoughts. Focus on the present moment and avoid dwelling on what could have been.
  • Get Help from Professionals: Seek the assistance of a mental health expert if your obsessive ideas continue and substantially affect your quality of life. They can offer counsel and assistance in navigating these emotions.
