How to Organize Your Closet

A cluttered closet can be more than just an eyesore; it can cause stress, wasted time, and even affect your mood.

Whether you’re aiming to free up some space, maximize your wardrobe’s potential, or simply create a more functional and aesthetically pleasing environment, organizing your closet is the first step.

Here’s how you can do it effectively, without feeling overwhelmed.

Step 1: Declutter and Sort

Before you even think about re-organizing your closet, start by decluttering. Pull everything out of the closet and lay it on your bed or the floor. As you go through each item, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Have I worn this in the last year? If not, it might be time to let it go.
  • Does it still fit? Don’t hang onto clothes you’ve outgrown or no longer enjoy wearing.
  • Is it in good condition? If it’s stained, ripped, or worn out beyond repair, it’s probably time to toss it.

Make three piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Trash. Be ruthless, but also realistic about what you truly use and need.

Step 2: Categorize Your Clothes

Now that you’ve decluttered, it’s time to categorize your clothes. The goal here is to group similar items together, so they are easy to find. Some common categories to consider are:

  • Tops (shirts, blouses, jackets)
  • Bottoms (jeans, skirts, trousers)
  • Dresses
  • Outerwear (coats, jackets, sweaters)
  • Shoes
  • Accessories (scarves, hats, bags)

This will help you identify which items are taking up the most space and ensure you don’t forget about any items you may have hidden at the back of your closet.

Step 3: Optimize Your Closet Space

Closets come in all shapes and sizes, and how you organize them depends on your available space. Here are a few ideas to maximize your closet’s potential:

  • Use Slim Hangers: Replace bulky, standard hangers with slimmer versions to maximize hanging space.
  • Install Additional Shelves: Shelving units or floating shelves can help store shoes, bags, or folded clothes without taking up floor space.
  • Drawer Organizers: Use drawer organizers for smaller items like scarves, belts, or jewelry. This will prevent them from getting tangled or lost.
  • Invest in Multi-functional Storage: Look for storage solutions that do more than one thing, such as hanging hooks, over-the-door organizers, or baskets for easy access.

Step 4: Fold or Hang Items Strategically

How you store your clothes makes a huge difference. Some items are better hung, while others should be folded. Here are some tips:

  • Hang: Dresses, coats, blouses, suits, and trousers (especially those that wrinkle easily).
  • Fold: Sweaters, t-shirts, jeans, and knitwear. These items can take up more space if hung, so folding them makes the most sense.
  • Use Dividers: Drawer dividers or baskets can help you organize smaller items like scarves, hats, or even your underwear and socks.
  • Consider Fabric Storage: For off-season clothing, vacuum-seal bags or fabric storage bins can help keep things organized and dust-free.

Step 5: Create a System You Can Stick To

Once you’ve organized everything, it’s crucial to maintain the system. One simple way to do this is by organizing your closet in a way that works for you. Some people prefer an arrangement by colour, while others prefer by type (e.g., dresses in one section, pants in another). Here are a few more ideas:

  • Seasonal Rotation: Store out-of-season clothes in bins or under the bed to free up closet space for current-season items.
  • Keep Frequently Worn Items Accessible: Place your most-worn items, like work clothes or daily wear, in the front and center of your closet for easy access.
  • Regular Maintenance: At least once a season, revisit your closet to make sure things are still organized, and declutter as needed.

Step 6: Make it Aesthetic

Your closet doesn’t have to just be functional – it can also be a beautiful space. Add some aesthetic touches like:

  • Matching Hangers: This gives your closet a uniform and polished look.
  • Decorative Baskets: Use stylish baskets for shoes, scarves, or other accessories to create a neat and cohesive appearance.
  • Lighting: If your closet feels dark and uninviting, consider adding battery-operated LED lights for an instant mood lift.
  • Mirrors: A full-length mirror inside your closet can also help you make quicker decisions when trying on outfits.
