Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made allegations that his son was terminated from his employment at a private company following the victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 elections.
The experienced politician claims that his son, Asiedu Nketia Jr., was employed by a private company authorized by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to facilitate the clearance of goods at the ports. However, the port authorities reportedly informed the private company that unless they terminated the employment of Asiedu Nketia Jnr., their license would be revoked.
Mr. Nketiah, who is known within political circles as General Mosquito, also said he has felt the impact of political victimization on his business. “I am a block-maker. Everybody knows I am a blockmaker,” he said.
Asiedu Nketia revealed that contractors who bought blocks from his enterprise had not been paid as a way of “squeezing” his business.
“[The] government gets to know that this contractor is owning Asiedu Nketia and so if he is paid Asiedu Nketia’s business will run”, he said.
“It is not as if the government institution does not have the money. The money is ready, but somehow they won’t pay you” the NDC General Secretary said.
He said his block-manufacturing factory in Accra is closed and the workers are laid off.
In a recent interview, Asiedu Nketia also revealed to Bola Ray that his daughter is a victim of political persecution.
He claimed that while she was employed by a government agency in the head office of the internal audit department, his daughter was strangely moved to a district office. He added that his daughter is currently pursuing a PhD in China on a government scholarship. According to Asiedu Nketia, his tale encapsulated what it means to be opposed.
“You are haunted in opposition,” he said and explained the objective is to “make you play ball with them.”
Asiedu Nketia said despite the political victimisation, he had no regrets for doing politics.
“If you ask Jesus how does it make him feel for being crucified, it is because the object of the service is bigger than these challenges,” he said.
