Afropop star Mr. May D has shared an intriguing story about how a potential collaboration with Akon unravelled during his time with Square Records, leading to his fallout with Psquare.
According to May D, things took an unexpected turn when Akon joined the “Chop My Money” project. “When we went to shoot the video, I was still in Nigeria,” he recounted.
“They had already left for the shoot, and Akon didn’t show up until I got to America. He told me, ‘If you’re not in the video, I’m not shooting it.’”

May D revealed that his meeting with Akon in the U.S. became a game-changer. “Akon called me to his office and said, ‘I have plenty of deals for you. When you get back to Nigeria, call me, and I’ll book your flight back to America.’”
However, his honesty would cost him. “When I returned to Nigeria, I told Psquare everything because they were the ones who brought me into the label. If I had known, I wouldn’t have said a word,” he admitted.
May D eventually left Square Records in 2012, citing internal conflicts. Reflecting on the experience, he described it as a bittersweet lesson about loyalty, transparency, and the challenges of navigating the music industry.
