Hitting a defenceless child is a violent and criminal act- Bovi calls out priest for assaulting Mass server

Nigerian comedian Bovi has expressed his anger and frustration over a viral video showing a Catholic priest physically assaulting a young Mass server during a wedding ceremony.

The incident, which occurred because the server failed to hold the microphone properly, has sparked outrage online, with Bovi calling for action from authorities.

Taking to social media, Bovi shared his thoughts after watching what he described as a “poorly staged apology” from the priest, where the clergyman downplayed the situation, calling it “normal correction” and a “minor” action.

Bovi pointed out the hypocrisy and danger in the priest’s behaviour, emphasizing that hitting a child for such a trivial reason is not only humiliating but damaging to the child’s confidence and well-being.

“He hit a defenseless child. He humiliated that child. He harmed that child’s confidence,” Bovi fumed. “Now imagine what this priest is capable of doing behind closed doors.”

Bovi further criticized the priest’s inability to control his emotions, warning that such unchecked behaviour could lead to more severe abuse if left unaddressed. He also called on the Nigerian police to investigate the incident and hold the priest accountable for his actions.

“If we think this is normal behaviour, then we are all abnormal,” Bovi added. “Knocking a kid in the head unprovoked is a violent and criminal act. @nigerianpolice, why haven’t you invited this man?”

Bovi’s comments reflect growing concern over the normalization of abuse in Nigeria, particularly when it is justified under the guise of “discipline” or “correction.”

He urged authorities and society to address the issue before it escalates, stating, “We must prevent and put out small fires before we all get consumed.”

In a final, pointed remark, Bovi lamented the state of society, where a priest—who is meant to uphold the teachings of Jesus—uses physical harm to express his unprocessed emotions. “We’re probably in hell already,” Bovi concluded, reflecting the disillusionment many feel about unchecked abuse in Nigeria.
