Comedy is no stranger to rivalry, but for Nigerian comedians Bovi and Basketmouth, the story is far more nuanced than a simple falling out.
Bovi has offered a rare glimpse into the dynamics of their relationship—one marked by admiration, respect, and an unavoidable divergence of paths in a recent podcast.
“Basketmouth is a powerhouse,” Bovi began, his tone filled with both respect and nostalgia. “Before I even thought of stepping onto the comedy stage, he was already a giant in the game.”
This acknowledgement of Basketmouth’s influence is no small feat, especially given the layers of history between the two.

Bovi reminisced about the early days when Basketmouth would act as the MC at his shows. His only request? That Basketmouth keeps his humour on hold.
“I’d tell him, ‘Don’t crack jokes, just handle the introductions.’ But even with that, he’d still steal the audience’s hearts with his charisma,” Bovi shared, laughing at the memory.
It wasn’t jealousy, he clarified, but a genuine concern about being overshadowed. “Imagine inviting the sun to your party and then wondering why everyone’s staring at the sky!”
Bovi quipped, illustrating the challenge of sharing a stage with someone of Basketmouth’s caliber.
As their careers flourished, the dynamics shifted. Both comedians reached a point where they could headline their own shows, sell out venues, and keep all the earnings.
“We realized we didn’t need to split the cake anymore—we could each bake our own,” Bovi explained, describing the professional split as a natural evolution rather than a fallout.
