The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has instituted restrictions on the operation of tricycles (also known as “Pragyia” and “Aboboyaa”) in Accra’s and Tema’s main commercial areas as well as in certain electoral sectors.

On Monday, August 14, 2023, the Regional Coordinating Council met and reached this conclusion. Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey commented on the situation, saying that the Regional Coordinating Council is responsible for keeping tabs on government policy as it is put into action.

He said that after a thorough evaluation of the area, it was decided to further ban Aboboyaa from using major roads, such as highways, as they had been doing for the past year. The minister informed JoyNews that the bylaws banning ‘Aboboyaa’ have already been passed and gazetted, but that a new bylaw regulating the movement of ‘Pragya’ will be passed soon.

“The governing body of the Regional Coordinating Council unanimously, by consensus, have agreed that the use of Pragyia in some selected assemblies in the Central Business District be restricted, and so to back it by law so that we are able to get the law to deal with people through a court of competent jurisdiction”, Mr. Quartey said.

According to a statement released by the assembly, Pragya’s freedom of movement has been restricted in the following regions: Korle Klottey in the Tema Metropolitan, La Dadekotopon, La Nkwantanang Madina, Ayawaso East, West, Central, and North, Ledzorkuku, and Okaikwei North.

There has also been a decision to tighten Pragya restrictions along the highway and other major thoroughfares in the area.
