GPRTU Planning A Possible Fare Increase

Abass Ibrahim Moro, head of communications for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has said that transportation charges may rise in response to a rise in the price of fuel and spare parts in Ghana.

There has been no decrease in the cost of maintenance items like lubricants and replacement parts, so the GPRTU has decided to raise transportation costs.

He said the GPRTU board of directors will meet “next week” to determine the increase’s amount and the start date. On December 19, 2022, the GPRTU and the National Road Transport Coordinating Council announced that they had reached a deal with stakeholders that would result in an 18.3 percent decrease in transportation costs.

However, he claims that there have already been two increases in fuel prices. He continued by saying, Prices of spare components have also increased. The prices of spare parts have actually increased instead of reduced. he remarked on Neat FM.

“We challenged the spare parts retailers who claimed to have lowered their pricing, but they have not yet revealed the specific amounts they have cut. We’ve tracked down a few examples, like tyres, that have experienced price increases. To add insult to injury,” Mr. Moro says, “it went up again after we stated they hadn’t lowered it.” he said.
