Government Dismisses Purported 20% Increase in Transport Fares

The Ministry of Transport has dismissed claims of a proposed 20% increase in transport fares by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), urging the public to disregard the information.

In a statement, the ministry clarified that there have been no negotiations with transport operators for a fare review.

The statement emphasized that any decision regarding fare adjustments would be communicated to the public after negotiations, as has been done in the past.

“We wish to inform the general public that there has not been any negotiation with the transport operators for a review of the transport fares. We therefore urge the general public to disregard the purported increase,” the statement emphasised.

The ministry affirmed its commitment to ensuring fair and reasonable public transport fares, considering the needs of both transport operators and the general public.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union had earlier announced plans for a fare increment of up to 20%, effective January 24, 2024, citing increased fuel prices and the impact of excessive taxes on spare parts affecting their operations.

The ministry’s response indicates a divergence of views between the government and the transport operators regarding the necessity and timing of a fare adjustment.
