Nigerian music superstar Davido has shared his perspective on the rising trend of Nigerians choosing to have their children born overseas, likening the practice to securing an “insurance policy” for their future.
Speaking on The Morning Hustle podcast, the singer shed light on the motivations behind this growing phenomenon, particularly among Nigeria’s upper and middle classes.
“My people are choosing to give birth abroad more than ever,” Davido stated. He described the decision as a deliberate investment in the future well-being of their children.
“It’s not just about having a foreign passport—it’s about creating opportunities and giving their kids a better chance at life in the long run.”

The artist elaborated on the practical benefits of this choice, pointing out the tangible advantages of foreign citizenship.
“Children born abroad have access to foreign citizenship, opportunities, good medical care, and quality education, among others,” he explained, highlighting the reasons behind its appeal.
This trend is not new, but it has gained momentum recently, especially as many Nigerians seek stability and global opportunities for their families.
With citizenship in countries like the United States or the United Kingdom, children are often afforded privileges that include ease of travel, access to world-class education systems, and the ability to explore career options in international markets.
