Gifty Oware Never Invited by BNI, Reports Are False – Lawyer

Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has refuted reports that Gifty Oware Mensah was invited by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), formerly BNI, insisting that no security agency had sought her for questioning before her return to Ghana on March 4, 2025.

“Up until today, she had not been invited by the BNI. Up until today, no security agency has invited her,” he emphasized in an interview on Joy News.

He explained that the speculation surrounding his client arose after the arrest of Kwaku Ohene Djan, which fueled reports that Gifty Oware was also wanted and had fled the country.

“I am putting it on record: Gifty Oware, up until today, has not been invited by any security agency. We wrote because, following the arrest of Kwaku Ohene, there were a lot of publications that the BNI was looking for her and she had absconded.”

The lawyer further pointed out that while President Akufo-Addo, in a parliamentary address, hinted at an ongoing investigation, he did not mention her name. However, connecting the dots, they realized she was likely being referred to.

“Subsequently, the president went to Parliament to make a similar allusion, although her name was not mentioned. So when we put one and two together, we concluded that all references were to her.”

Dismissing claims that Gifty Oware was evading justice, he questioned whether the reports branding her a flight risk were justified.

“Now, when you put these facts together, would you describe her as a flight risk?”

He also revealed that the Minority Leader had concerns over how Kwaku Ohene Djan was arrested, fearing that similar “rambo-style” detentions could provoke public unrest.

“The Minority Leader, seeing what had happened to Kwaku Ohene Djan, concluded that the rambo-style of arrest did not engender peace and might lead to protests, which would not augur well for the work of the BNI. So he went out of his way to ensure that certain arrangements were made so that people were not picked up in that manner.”

Despite widespread reports that she had absconded to avoid questioning, her lawyer maintains that Gifty Oware was never invited and voluntarily returned to Ghana to clear the air.
