Idris Elba has been confirmed as the headliner for Ghana’s second annual Africa Cinema Summit, hosted by the National Film Authority from October 7 to 10 at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.
This year’s event, themed “The Relevance of Cinema in African Communities,” will gather influential figures like former Netflix executive Fiona Lamptey and Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer.
Key discussions will center on boosting local content production, improving cinema accessibility in underserved African communities, and enhancing cinema investment strategies. Representatives from several African nations and global investors, including Afreximbank and the IFC, will attend.
Elba shared his excitement ahead of the event, saying, “Africa has been at the forefront of communication and storytelling for centuries… I am thrilled to be part of this year’s Africa Cinema Summit.”
His focus is on bringing African stories to global prominence, leveraging both local and diaspora talent.
The 2023 summit follows last year’s successful event, which prompted significant developments, such as Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo’s approval of a 20% film tax rebate. This incentive aims to attract global productions and boost the local film industry.
Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, CEO of the National Film Authority, highlighted the summit’s collaborative nature, stressing, “The only way to grow local content… is to work together,” noting Africa’s vast potential in the global cinema market.
