Ghanaian agricultural economist and politician Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has indicated the country’s agricultural sector has the ability to bring in enough money to help in the repayment of debt.

In a recent interview with the Daily Graphic, he said if the government properly invested in agriculture, it may help further the government’s industrialization programme.

“All I am saying is that, if properly invested in, agriculture holds the potential to generate enough local revenue and foreign exchange to finance our industrialization agenda and all our debts,” he said.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto resigned as the minister of food and agriculture in January 2023. Prior to his appointment as Minister of Food and Agriculture in 2017, he served in Parliament as Deputy Ranking Member and then substantive Ranking Member of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs.

On Tuesday, January 10, he sent his resignation letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House. Upon receiving the resignation, President Akufo-Addo sent his best wishes for the former official’s future endeavours.

Dr. Akoto’s resignation follows the Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen’s, departure from the administration so that he could focus on his Presidential ambitions. He isn’t the only one competing for the NPP leadership; Kwabena Agyapong, Kennedy Agyapong, Joe Ghartey, and Boagye Agyarko have all made public declarations of their candidacy as well.
