Ghanaian rapper Kwame Ametepee Tsikata, better known as M.anifest, has weighed in on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections, attributing the loss to widespread disillusionment with the state of leadership in the country.
In an interview with James Copnall on BBC’s Newsday on December 9, M.anifest shared his perspective on the factors that led to the NPP’s crushing defeat and the expectations the electorate now has for future leadership under John Dramani Mahama and other political figures.
M.anifest emphasized that, despite the political upheaval, confidence in leadership is only built through tangible results.
He stated, “It’s difficult to be confident in any leadership here until you see how they operate. In our local parlance, we say ‘show working.'” He pointed out that the electorate’s trust in the NPP had eroded, not just because of political rhetoric, but due to a lack of visible, effective governance.
The rapper continued by explaining the widespread dissatisfaction among the Ghanaian public. “Ultimately, I think what happened in this election was that people were unhappy that the country was not being run, but rather, it was being run down,” M.anifest observed.
He was referring to the criticisms levied against the NPP government’s handling of the country’s resources, economic policies, and promises that many felt were left unfulfilled.
M.anifest also suggested that the election results were a direct response to this frustration, where voters expressed their desire for change.
“I think there is a level of accountability that we as citizens are going to hold him [John Dramani Mahama] and any other leaders to at this point,” he added, emphasizing that the electorate is now more politically aware and willing to demand transparency and action from their leaders.
