Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has sparked a debate by challenging the widely accepted notion of multiple republics in Ghana’s history.
During a discussion on Good Morning Ghana with host Randy Abbey, Pratt expressed his disagreement with the popular narrative of the country’s so-called “Fourth Republic,” stating that Ghana has always had only one republican state.
“I also disagree with the concept of a Fourth Republic. Ghana has always had only one republican state which has never changed,” Pratt emphasized during the conversation.

His comments struck a chord as they directly contradict the historical interpretation commonly accepted by Ghanaians, who distinguish the eras of governance based on the republics’ numbering — from the First Republic, following independence in 1957, to the Fourth Republic, which began in 1992.
Pratt further explained that the idea of multiple republics stems from the overthrow of the Nkrumah government.
“This idea of a second, third, and fourth republic must have its origins in the overthrow of the Nkrumah government, where opponents of Nkrumah and reactionary elements wanted to portray the Nkrumah era as a different kind of republic, and that we needed a new republic,” he said.
