The Ghana Education Service (GES) is set to introduce Chinese language studies into the national school curriculum, marking a significant step in broadening linguistic and career opportunities for students.

The initiative, which will be piloted in selected schools across the country, has been strongly backed by the Central Regional Directorate of Education in partnership with the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast (CIUCC).

Speaking on the development, the Central Regional Director of Education, Mr. Emmanuel Essuman, emphasized the value of this new language addition.

“The Central Regional Directorate of Education affirms its commitment to working with CIUCC in selecting pilot schools, rolling out, and fully implementing the program.”

Chinese language education has steadily gained traction in Ghana, particularly in the Central Region, where students have benefited from various opportunities.

Mr. Essuman underscored the advantages of learning the language, stating, “It is worthy to note that Chinese language education has provided an opportunity for students in the Central Region not only to learn a second language but also to pursue degrees in Chinese, access scholarships in China, participate in global competitions such as the Chinese Bridge, and secure employment in Chinese enterprises.”

The Confucius Institute at UCC has played a key role in fostering Chinese language studies in Ghana, offering training, resources, and international exposure for students.

The institute’s contribution has not only enhanced the region’s academic offerings but also provided students with a competitive edge in the job market.

While the inclusion of Chinese in the school curriculum has sparked conversations about linguistic diversity, Mr. Essuman assured that the new program will complement existing language studies.

“Chinese is one of the languages available for study,” he noted, reinforcing GES’s commitment to multilingual education.
