Galamsey Is Not Just About the Environment, It’s About Survival – Keche Andrew

Ghanaian musician Keche Andrew has delved into the controversial issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana.

His insights shed light on the intricate dynamics surrounding this persistent problem, which has garnered significant attention from both the public and government officials over the years.

Andrew pointed out that while past presidents have made efforts to combat galamsey, he believes that it should not be used as a political tool to mock or criticize those involved in the practice.

“The number of Ghanaians who are unemployed and uneducated who feel they can’t get an office work or capital to start a trade are all involved in galamsey,” he noted in an interview on Property FM, highlighting the economic desperation that drives many into this sector.

The musician further elaborated on the societal implications of galamsey, stating that a significant portion of the population, approximately 10%, is engaged in this activity.

He explained that these individuals prioritize immediate financial gain over environmental concerns, often disregarding the detrimental effects on water bodies and local ecosystems.

“These people don’t care; they just want to make money whether the water bodies are being destroyed or not,” he lamented.

Moreover, Andrew raised an important point about the political ramifications of confronting galamsey.

He suggested that politicians may hesitate to address the issue head-on for fear of losing votes from constituents who rely on the income generated by illegal mining activities.

This complex interplay between economic necessity and environmental stewardship poses a significant challenge for policymakers.

Ghana is gearing up for another round of protests against illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” scheduled for October 3-5, 2024.

This demonstration follows the arrest of 39 citizens during recent protests aimed at addressing the galamsey crisis.

Protesters are demanding justice and freedom of speech, asserting that the arrests were unjust and an infringement on their rights.

The protests are dubbed “Free The Citizens” and “Say No To Galamsey,” emphasizing a collective push for the release of those detained and a more significant stand against illegal mining practices.

Social media campaigns supporting these movements have gained traction, with various influencers and celebrities calling for action
