In an interview on Channel One TV, Minority Leader Afenyo Markin spoke openly about his involvement in Freemasonry and addressed the misconceptions surrounding it, particularly in relation to the Catholic Church.
“Freemasonry is not anti-Christ. If nothing at all, at the highest level of Masonry, you must profess Christ,” he stated.
Markin explained that much of the criticism about Freemasonry stems from misunderstandings, adding, “People don’t know, and people say things. But I’m ready for that debate.”

Markin also emphasized his commitment to the Catholic Church, saying, “My Church first. The Church doesn’t force people; the Church shows compassion, listens, and shows love.”
He pointed out that he has not received any formal communication from his Archbishop, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, despite seeing letters circulating about the issue. “I have been seeing letters flying, but nobody has written a letter to me personally,” he explained.
The Minority Leader revealed that many Catholics are members of Freemasonry but are hesitant to speak about it openly.
“If I was afraid, I wouldn’t have brought it up,” he said. Markin expressed that he is ready to have conversations about the fraternities he belongs to, making it clear that his faith and his involvement in Freemasonry are not mutually exclusive for him.
“I’m a committed Catholic. I’m ready to discuss the fraternities that I join,” he concluded, reinforcing his belief in the importance of open dialogue.
