Four people, one of whom was a pregnant woman, lost their lives in the Ntcheu district of southern Malawi due to a tragic incident during the funeral procession of former Malawian Vice President Saulos Chilima.
Reports from local media indicated that a vehicle in the motorcade carrying Chilima’s body collided with mourners, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to 12 others.
The injured persons are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital, as stated in the Xinhua news agency report. Chilima, who passed away in a plane crash the previous week, was laid to rest in his hometown of Nsipe in Ntcheu following his arrival on Sunday and burial on Monday.
Felix Njawala, the spokesman for Chilima’s party, said there was some tension along the route as mourners demanded the procession stop so they could see the coffin.
“In Dedza, people blocked the road and demanded to see the coffin” he told AFP, “only when the convoy stopped were people pacified and the convoy was able to proceed” adding that in some instances people threw stones at the convoy.
Chilima died last week along with eight others during a military aircraft crash in Malawi’s Chikangawa Forest in dense fog. Shortly after the accident, the military began its search operation, after which the wreckage of the plane was found on Tuesday.
