Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Mustapha Ahmed, has been confirmed dead after battling an ailment for the past few months, according to a report by the Herald Ghana.

Further information regarding his passing and the arrangements for his funeral will be disclosed in upcoming publications, as this news is still developing.

Ahmed, born on June 8, 1960, in Bawku, a town located in the Upper East Region of Ghana, has strong roots in his hometown. Having completed his education at the University of Ghana Medical School and Dentistry, he successfully earned his bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery in 1983.

Ahmed, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), joined the Third Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana in January 2001. He represented the Ayawaso East Constituency after winning the 2000 Ghanaian general election. Ahmed was re-elected in the 2004 and 2008 Ghanaian general elections, serving as a member of the Fourth and Fifth Parliaments, respectively.

In the 2004 Ghanaian general elections, Ahmed secured his position as the member of parliament for the Ayawaso East constituency in the fourth parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. He served from January 7, 2005, to January 6, 2009. Ahmed received 49,354 votes out of the total valid votes cast, which accounted for 56.1% of the total.

His opponents, Abdiel Godly Babaaali of the People’s National Convention and Daddah Braimah B. of the New Patriotic Party, obtained 4,095 votes and 34,453 votes respectively. These figures represented 4.7% and 39.2% of the total valid votes cast. Ahmed’s victory was attributed to the support he garnered as a candidate of the National Democratic Congress.

Furthermore, Ahmed’s constituency was one of the 10 constituencies won by the National Democratic Congress in the Greater Accra region during that election. Overall, the National Democratic Congress secured a total of 128 parliamentary seats in the fourth parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
