In a recent essay published by The New York Times, former Vibe editor-in-chief Danyel Smith revealed that the rapper in question threatened her life following a disagreement over magazine covers from December 1997 and January 1998.
The 59-year-old editor recounted how Diddy insisted on previewing the images before publication, despite it being against company policy at the time. When she refused, he reportedly reacted poorly.
To ensure her safety, a plan was put in place in case Diddy showed up at the New York City offices. Given his history of violent behaviour, precautions were taken to protect Danyel.
Unfortunately, she had to put the safety plan into action when Diddy visited the office to discuss the covers.
Despite being escorted away in a cab, she was later contacted by Diddy demanding to see the photos in advance, which she once again declined. This led to further threats from the rapper.
“It was then that Combs told me, as I’ve retold hundreds of times over the years, that he would see me ‘dead in the trunk of a car.’” OMG!!!
Who threatens to harm someone like this over a magazine cover? What the f**k! Danyel said she immediately told him “to take that threat back.”
To which she remembered him replying: “Take what back?” And after giving a “vile laugh,” he allegedly added: “‘[Expletive] you. I know where you are right now. Right on Lexington.’”
