Former Twitter Africa Staff Finally Receive Pay-Off After Sacking

Formerly known as Twitter, X has recently settled the outstanding payments owed to staff members laid off from its African headquarters over a year ago, according to their representative agency.

The employees, who were based in Accra, Ghana, were let go in November 2022, shortly after Elon Musk took control of the company. Most had only been employed for a brief period before their termination.

Reports indicate that the company, now under Musk’s leadership, initiated a significant downsizing effort globally, resulting in the dismissal of over 6,000 employees due to substantial financial losses.

Despite previous assertions from X that all former employees had been compensated fully, the African contingent, numbering less than 20, faced challenges in receiving their redundancy packages and repatriation expenses. Agency Seven Seven, representing the staff, confirmed the successful resolution of the matter but did not disclose the exact amount of the settlement.

The process has been arduous for the affected employees, with some facing financial strain and mental health difficulties due to the delayed payments. Many had relocated from neighboring countries like Nigeria and found themselves stranded in Ghana following their termination.

Negotiations between X and the sacked African staff reportedly commenced after the BBC brought attention to their plight. This follows a lawsuit filed against X by former employees in California for allegedly reneging on promised severance packages totaling at least $500 million.
